Xantinol nicotinate (or xanthinol niacinate) is a vasodilator. It is a combination of xanthinol and niacin.
It enhances blood flow to the peripheral and cerebral tissues. Nutritive microcirculation is enhanced by increasing the erythrocyte elasticity, improving the flow proper ties of the blood and reducing the peripheral resist ance while simultaneously improving cardiac func tion. It improves cerebral metabolism and conse quently cerebral function by increasing the glucose uptake across the bloodbrain barrier and increase in glucose and oxygen utilisation in the brain cells. It also depresses raised serum lipid and fibrinogen levels and inhibits platelet aggregation.
Xantinol nicotinate is used to treat peripheral vascular disease, hyperlipidaemia, recent myocardial infarction, recent cerebrovascular accident, acute haern orrhage, decompensated cardiac insufficiency, and disordered cerebral function.
